:bulletyellow:  William T. Spears -x-Reaper! Reader  :bulletyellow:

Back in the Field

You sat amidst the humans, unseen as you effortlessly blended amongst the large crowd. Granted you had had innumerable years to practice being invisible, but you still held your skillset in high regard due to how important they were to you as a Reaper. Currently you were out of your normal environment- but you wouldn’t have traded your position for anything.

The Noah's Ark Circus was a troupe of seemingly normal standing; a nice attraction for those humans in need of awe-inspiring entertainment. But for the Shinigami Society the Circus had become troublesome, and had gained its own detailed case file. This of course meant loads of paperwork and a handful unlucky sod Grim Reapers who landed way more overtime than they wanted.

Though no official killings had occurred on the actual premises of the circus, there were a handful of carnies that had been identified as the ones responsible, and had thus been deemed targets. Because of this and the fact that their personal ends were coming soon, they had all been placed under special surveillance.

You were in-fact a well-seasoned Grim Reaper- though you hadn't been called or needed for this particular job. The Higher Ups had already assigned the case to the Supervisor of the DMD (Dispatch Management Division) - but your curiosity had gotten the better of you. So here you were, watching the performance the Circus put on, and waiting for the Reaper tasked with the case to turn up.

It was nearing the end of the show when he finally appeared, but despite the wait you were in good spirits.

With glasses-covered bright neon green eyes - the same color as any other Shinigami- you gazed upward at the Trapeze with utter amusement. You had seen many things in your extended, supernatural lifetime, but this comical sight was truly one you would never forget.

Under the Circus lights and dazzle, high in the air, your colleague stood. Dressed in bright clothing (a complete contradiction to his usual style of choice) was Senior Grim Reaper William T. Spears.  Armed with his Death Scythe in hand, trademark stoic expression intact, and swinging on the trapeze as if it was an easy task, he was nothing short of commanding. You glanced about, recognizing the expressions of awe around you with a chuckle. If these mortals had any idea of what Spears really was or what he could do, they'd be running away screaming. . . Or what his acrobat 'partner' was, for that matter.

Here you fully laughed, as you watched William and the handsome demon try to kill each other. Though the performance still was a huge success to the crowd you couldn't help but find the humor in the life-long feud. Demons and Soul Reapers never got along, but for William to be working with one must have nearly been the death of him! Not that you blamed him- you weren't over the top in showing your hate for Demon's nor did you love them.

Smiling to yourself you stood from your seat in the crowd and exited the Big-Top tent, as the performance drew to its close.

You waited for him in the shadows outside his tent, patiently watching the carnies as they scrambled about for the finale. In truth you had only come to witness one act, and the rest held no interest for you. You had been alive long enough to have seen many of the 'wonders' that humans oohed and awed over, so there were very few surprises left for you.
Still, seeing William in yellow clothes dancing up top with a demon had been more than worth the trip.

You thought of this for several minutes before you were pulled out of your thoughts, by the sound of someone approaching. You knew it was him before he ever came into your sights.

William silently walked past your place in the darkness of the nearby tent- it seemed he hadn't seen you, but you knew that he had- before he came to a stop two feet away. His back was to you, but you could already read him like a book.

"What are you doing here, (F/n)?"

You left your place from the shadows but didn't move in front of him. "Grell and Ronald told me that you were tackling an extremely irksome case, and I had to see for myself."

"Oh? And why is that?"

"I couldn't pass up the chance to see you perform," you said reaching out a hand to rest on his shoulder. "It's been too long."

William sighed audibly before turning around to face you, and you took in the familiar plains of his handsome face and the fiery green hidden beneath well-crafted glasses with the gentle tingles of remembrance.

You had been partners with William T. Spears- countless years ago, after his short stint with Grell Sutcliff- before you had both proved your worth and been promoted. You had been friends and good team mates, and it had all ended too soon.
You now taught new Reapers their trade, and Spears enforced it in the field. You were separated and yet still brought together by your teamwork; irony that wasn't lost on you.

"I'm not an animal, (F/n). If you came to gloat I would rather we postpone this conversation until I'm off duty." William said formally, but you immediately shook your head.

You moved closer to him as you spoke. "No, William. You have me all wrong. I didn't come to make fun of you, or pass judgment on your task."

Finally you were close enough to lean in and hug him, which you did. As your arms encased him and your chest brushed against his, William froze up, but you paid it no mind. He'd always been a bit squeamish when it came to physical contact, but you were well used to it. You had known him for hundreds of years afterall.

"I've missed watching you work," you said sincerely with a smile as you pulled away. "You're the best Reaper I've ever known, William . . . And with how strange this case is, I wanted to have a front row seat, when you accomplished your assignment."

For a moment William was silent, calculating you before he lifted his glasses higher on his face with his Scythe. "I would appreciate it if you didn't stand by and watch, (F/n).  . .  I'm due for unwanted overtime."

As you looked into his eyes with your own green ones you smiled softly, "You want a hand so you can finish up early?"

Once more William T. Spears shifted his glasses- a special tell that you had long ago learned to read. "If you wouldn't mind."

With a stunning smile you flicked your left wrist - producing your Death Scythe (A silver-tipped Cutlass) out of thin air.

"No at all, William. I've been looking for an excuse to get back into the field."

William flashed you one of his own rare smiles. "Well it would seem that you've found one."

"Yes," you agreed happily. "I have."

This was a request from :iconknucklesechemerald: who wanted a William T. Spears reader insert. :la:

It's my first time writing for Will but hopefully I did alright. ^^;  What do you guys think? Did I do okay? Was Will in-character?

Disclaimer: I do NOT own the cover photo used, Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji, William T Spears, Grim Reapers, or the Noah's Ark Circus.
